Octopus and occupational asthma
Rosado et al present the case of a twenty two year old woman who suffered from rhinoconjunctivitis, episodes of breathlessness and a persistent cough accompanied by wheezing.
She had worked for two years in a canning fish and shellfish factory where she was directly handling and cooking seafood. Her symptoms were always worse on workdays with some improvement over the weekends. It was noticed that the symptoms appeared within 20 minutes after she handled octopus and even when work colleagues cut it nearby. She tolerated handling other seafood.
Skin prick test were negative for other seafood and other common allergens.
