Food Diary

I'm pleased to announce the new revised and updated Food Diary is now on line.

The Print for Yourself Food Diary is in pdf format and is free to download, share and even distribute from other sites.

If you are new to the concept of using a food diary start with my introduction.
If you are familiar with the concept then you are welcome to go straight to the download page.

Research Updates:

Food Allergy in Spain
A cross-sectional study carried out in Spain found the most common foods causing allergies were fruits (33.3% of cases), nuts (26%), shellfish (22%), egg (16%), milk (13.9%) and fish (9.8%). Milk and egg were the most common foods in children under 5 years of age, whereas fruits and nuts were the most prevalent foods in those over 5 years. Full details.

Food-Induced Anaphylaxis in Italy
The primary aim of a study carried out by Asero et al was to identify the main foods/food allergens causing anaphylaxis in Italy. The frequency of anaphylaxis and the relative importance of many offending foods was assessed in 1,110 adults with food allergy diagnosed at 19 allergy centres scattered throughout Italy during 2007  Full details.

Wine Processing Aids
A study by Kirschner et al set out to establish whether traces of egg, milk, and fish derived processing aids used in winemaking might elicit clinical reactions in food-allergic individuals. Full details

Scientists have made a breakthrough which could reduce the risk of children suffering serious allergic reactions to peanuts and other food.

Pine nuts associated with a bitter aftertaste
The UK’s Food Standards Agency is investigating curious reports of a lingering metallic taste in the mouth of people who have eaten pine nuts, sometimes lasting as long as two weeks.

Mayo Clinic Study Finds Celiac Disease Four Times More Common than in 1950s
Celiac disease, an immune system reaction to gluten in the diet, is over four times more common today than it was 50 years ago, according to findings of a Mayo Clinic study published this month in the journal Gastroenterology.

Enzyme system offers extended shelf life for cakes
Caravan Ingredients has developed a new enzyme-based ingredient system which it claims can extend the shelf life of cakes, even those with a low fat content which tend to stale faster.

Food adulterations takes place  not just during the manufacturing process as the news item below demonstrates:
Toxic chemical in plastic pallets could be leaching into food
The use of plastic pallets containing the chemical decabromodiphenyl ether (Deca) that are used to ship, cool and store fruit and vegetables should be halted on safety grounds, a US environmental organisation has said.
